Can you bring luggage on Italian trains? Yes. Here is what each train allows.
You can bring your suitcases on every Italian train, and nobody weighs them. The limit is the space, not a rule: on a Frecciarossa the overhead shelf takes a cabin case and the rack at the end of the carriage takes the big ones; on a Regionale the case stays beside you. Below: each operator’s written luggage rule, where to put what, and the one trip where sending the case ahead beats carrying it.
The written rule for each train

The rule that bites is the one none of them print: you lift the case yourself. Up a 40 cm step from the platform. Onto a shelf above your head. Down again at a station with no lift and a nine-minute change. One 20 kg case on a Frecciarossa is a pleasant afternoon. Two 23 kg cases and a carry-on across Firenze Santa Maria Novella is a different trip, and it is the trip most people are actually planning.
Keep the trip manageable
Once aboard, use the space intended for your bag and follow staff instructions. Keep doors and aisles clear. Put your phone, tickets, medicine and valuables in a small bag that stays with you.
Before leaving home, try moving everything at once: suitcase, day bag and any extra purchases. If that already takes two trips across the room, reconsider the load before adding a train change.
Label your luggage so it is easy to identify. Before your stop, check where every item is and gather the smaller things. Leave yourself room to get off without rushing another passenger.
Plan the changes, not just the long ride
A comfortable seat does not solve the walk between platforms or the trip from the final station to your accommodation. Check the station’s accessibility information if you need access without steps, and ask the operator about assistance in advance.

When the case should take the train without you
Florence, Rome, Venice in nine days with two large cases each: three high-speed legs, three station changes, a ferry at the end. You need the cases at the last hotel, not on the train. Send them ahead and carry the daypack.
Carry it: a manageable suitcase is the straightforward option when you need its contents every day. You keep your belongings with you and avoid coordinating another handover.
