Luggage Storage in Tremezzo and Lenno

Tremezzina is where the two most photographed villas on Lake Como sit, which is why half the people who come here are day visitors with luggage and nowhere to put it. There is no left-luggage office in Tremezzo or Lenno, and Villa del Balbianello will not hold your bags. This page is about what to do instead.

The short answer

  • Staying here tonight: your hotel takes the bags, before check-in and after checkout, free.
  • Visiting the villas for the day: there is nowhere in either village to leave a suitcase. Plan around it.
  • Passing through between two towns: have the bags moved to tonight's address and walk the gardens empty-handed.
  • Arriving by car: parking is scarce and the villas are not reached from the car park you find.

Villa Balbianello does not store luggage

This is the one people get wrong, and it is worth stating flatly: Villa del Balbianello has no luggage storage. Not a cloakroom, not a locker, nothing behind the ticket desk.

It matters more here than at a normal museum because of how you get in. The villa sits on its own promontory, reached on foot from Lenno along a lakeside path of about a kilometre, or by shuttle boat from the Lenno pier. Neither route is one you want to do towing a large case, and there is nothing at the far end to leave it with.

If you are set on visiting with bags in tow, the villa's own number is +39 0344 56110 and it is worth a call to check the current arrangements before you build a day around it.

Villa Carlotta and the Tremezzo waterfront

Villa Carlotta sits directly on the Tremezzo shore, a short walk from the ferry stop, which makes it the easier of the two to reach. Easier to reach is not the same as easy with luggage: the gardens climb the hillside in terraces and steps, and staff are under no obligation to mind a suitcase while you walk them.

Along the Tremezzo waterfront you'll find bars, hotels and a ferry pier, and no public storage of any kind. In practice people either leave bags with a hotel they are actually staying at, or they don't bring them.

What the hotels will do

Every hotel and B&B in Tremezzina will hold luggage for its own guests, before check-in and after checkout, at no charge. That covers you if you are sleeping here. It does nothing for the much larger group passing through for an afternoon.

Apartment stays are the awkward middle: no reception, no back room, and a checkout time that lands hours before the boat you're catching.

The way locals solve it

Tremezzina is a stop on an itinerary far more often than it is a destination, so the fix is almost always the same. The bags never come here at all. They go straight from last night's town to tonight's town while you spend the day between the two villas.

We collect from a hotel, a villa or an apartment anywhere in Tremezzo, Lenno, Mezzegra or Ossuccio and deliver to Menaggio, Bellagio, Varenna, Como, a Milan hotel or the airports. Oversized items included, everything insured, from €5 a bag.

“For just €50, BagMeHome picked up our 5 bags from Como train station in the morning and transferred them directly to our hotel in Menaggio. This was an excellent value and allowed us to explore for the entire day (Como, then Lenno, then Menaggio) without worrying about our luggage.”

That is the whole pattern: Como in the morning, Lenno in the afternoon, Menaggio at night, and the suitcases arriving separately. It costs about what a day of paid storage for the same bags would, and it saves you the return trip to fetch them.

Questions we get asked

Can I leave luggage at Villa Balbianello?

No. The villa has no luggage storage. Bags have to be dealt with before you arrive — it is reached on foot along a lakeside path from Lenno or by shuttle boat from the Lenno pier.

Is there luggage storage in Tremezzo or Lenno?

There is no public left-luggage office or locker bank in either village. Hotels hold bags for their own guests on checkout day; beyond that, a pickup service is the practical option.

Does Villa Carlotta have luggage storage?

Do not count on it. Neither villa is set up as a left-luggage point, and large cases are a problem in gardens built on terraces and steps.

Can you collect bags here and deliver them up the lake?

Yes. Tremezzo, Lenno, Mezzegra and Ossuccio to Menaggio, Bellagio, Varenna, Como, Milan or the airports are all standard runs, from €5 per bag.

We're stopping here between two towns. What do people usually do?

Have the bags collected from where you slept last night and delivered to where you sleep tonight, then visit the villas in between with nothing in your hands. It is the most common booking we take on this stretch of shore.
