Luggage in Menaggio: Hotels, Villas and How to Reach Them Without Stress

Menaggio is one of Lake Como's most charming and lively towns. A wide promenade, a historic centre, open views across the water. But where Bellagio's problem is stairs, Menaggio's is distance and elevation.

The town starts at the lakefront around 200 m and climbs into hillside villages more than 100 m above it. Great for panoramas. Less great when your hotel is up there and your suitcase is down here.

Getting to Menaggio

Menaggio has one pier, used by both the line boats and the car ferry. It has no railway station; the nearest is Varenna-Esino, 4 km away across the water.

By boat

The car ferry is the workhorse of the middle lake. Menaggio to Varenna and Menaggio to Bellagio are both timetabled at 15 minutes, and Menaggio to Cadenabbia at 10. From Como, the fast service takes about 50 minutes and the ordinary boat between an hour and three quarters and two and a half hours.

Frequency is the thing to plan around, because it moves with the calendar:

Those are summer 2026 figures. Sunday is roughly a fifth thinner and starts an hour and a half later. And in the winter timetable the car ferry drops Cadenabbia altogether and runs Bellagio–Menaggio–Varenna only. Always check the Navigazione Laghi timetables for the season you are travelling in.

By bus

The line from Como is the C110, formerly numbered C10. Como coach station to Menaggio Piazza Roma is a consistent 66 minutes, or 62 from Como San Giovanni railway station, with the first departure around 05:20 and buses every half hour to hour after that. A day ticket is €11.50. The same line carries on to Colico in about another hour.

Worth knowing: the bus station and the ferry pier are not the same place. Menaggio's autostazione is about 860 m from the pier, some 12 minutes on foot. If you are connecting bus to boat with bags, that walk is part of the journey and nobody puts it in the timetable.

Flat or uphill: where the hotels actually are

This is the part worth checking before you book. The lakefront hotels are a genuinely short, flat walk. The upper ones are a climb, and the climbs are not equal.

Walking distances are measured along the real street routes; the climb is the height gain over the lakefront. Note the names: it is the Grand Hotel Menaggio and the Grand Hotel Victoria, which matters if you are searching for them.

A flat kilometre is a 12-minute stroll. The same kilometre with 100 m of ascent and a 20 kg case is 20 to 30 minutes and a change of shirt. For the Adler, at nearly 200 m above the water, budget closer to 40.

Loveno and Nobiallo are not the same problem

Menaggio has two outlying villages, and guides tend to lump them together. They are opposites.

• Loveno sits at about 330 m, roughly 130 m above the lake, 1.7 km from the pier. This is the real climb, and where several of the upper hotels and most of the private villas are.
• Nobiallo is about 2 km along the shore to the north and barely above the water. It is a long walk, not a steep one. Very different bags problem.

Taxis and private hire operators do work in Menaggio and the official town site lists several by name, including water taxis. Book ahead rather than expecting to find one waiting at the dock.

What the ferry will let you carry

Worth knowing before you plan a day of hopping between Menaggio, Bellagio and Varenna with your bags in tow.

Navigazione Laghi carries one bag per passenger free, and only if its longest side is under 60 cm, its volume under 40 dm³ and its weight under 20 kg. Every extra bag, and every oversize one, is charged the set fare per item.

The part that catches people: on the fast services, luggage with a side longer than 60 cm is not accepted on board at all. A standard checked suitcase is usually 65 to 77 cm tall. On the hydrofoil that is not a surcharge, it is a refusal.

Bicycles are also barred from the fast services, and on ordinary boats only certain sailings are marked as suitable. Buying a ticket on board rather than at a staffed office adds €1.00.

Where to leave your bags

Menaggio is thin here, and it is better to know that in advance than to find out at 10 a.m. on your checkout day.

There is no staffed left-luggage office, no lockers at the pier and no station to have one. The tourist Infopoint at Piazza Garibaldi 3 opens daily 09:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00 and does not hold bags. The automated deposit that Bellagio has at its pier does not exist here.

What does exist is a single app-based partner point. Radical Storage lists one in the town centre, on Via Lusardi, at about €5 a bag for the day.

Read the opening hours before you count on it: that point is inside a bar and does not open until 12:00. If you check out at 10:00 and your train or boat is at 18:00, it cannot help you for the first two hours — which are exactly the hours you needed it.
