Skiing the Dolomites with your own gear: where to store it and how to move it

First decide whether the gear needs to move at all

The Sellaronda is a day circuit through Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Arabba and Val di Fassa. It starts and finishes in the same valley. If your hotel stays put, so can your suitcase. Keep the ski kit at your accommodation or a lift-side depot and return for it after skiing.

Dolomiti Superski recommends allowing about six hours for the loop, starting before 10:00 and reaching the last pass by 15:30. Wind or snow can close lifts. That is a reason to plan the ski day around getting back to your base, rather than treating the circuit as a reliable way to deliver luggage to a new hotel.

Changing hotels? Give the gear its own plan. A linked piste map is not a parcel route, and a ski depot is not a receiving address unless its operator explicitly agrees.

Where to leave skis between ski days

Choose a depot beside the lift you actually use, not simply the closest listing to the town name. These are concrete places to check:

Ask the operator about space for your exact ski or snowboard length, boot drying, access hours, price and whether it accepts privately owned gear. A depot may be attached to a rental shop but still have separate storage terms.

How to handle a hotel change between valleys

Write the transfer as two street addresses with dates: “Selva hotel, collect Tuesday” → “Cortina hotel, receive before Friday.” The exact property matters. A carrier needs a label address, postcode, contact phone and someone who can release and receive every parcel. A chalet without reception needs a person available in the carrier’s window.

If you need the same skis that afternoon, carry them in your vehicle or arrange a direct transfer with a driver. A standard parcel service is a poor fit for an immediate handover. If there is a gap of several days, ask us to check a carrier quote and delivery estimate; travel between resorts with the clothes you need in a daypack.

Val Gardena has valley buses and winter ski buses, but routes and ski-bus dates vary by season. Use the official timetable for your travel date and ask the operator about long ski bags before relying on a bus connection with the full kit.

Count parcels, then measure the packed kit

Make one row for each physical item: ski bag, snowboard bag, boot bag, suitcase. “Two pairs of skis” may be one or two parcels depending on how they are packed and what the selected carrier accepts. Measure the outside length, width and height and weigh each finished parcel. A label price and size limit apply to the parcel, not the bare ski.

Photograph the closed package and tell us whether it is a padded bag, hard case or box. The selected carrier may require more protection than a travel sleeve. Keep passports, medicine, keys, valuables and anything needed on arrival with you. A hotel’s ski room is useful only after that hotel has agreed to receive the shipment in your name.

Three useful trip patterns

• One base, several ski areas: store your gear at the hotel or the lift-side depot; carry only what you need for that day. No inter-hotel shipment is needed.
• Selva → Cortina with a rest day: send us the two hotels, the pickup day and the first day you will ski in Cortina. We check whether a carrier can meet that window; otherwise take the kit by road.
• Dolomites → Venice or Florence: if skiing ends before the city stay, ask for collection from the resort hotel and delivery to your next address or home. Travel onward with the city clothes you kept aside.

What to check before booking the trip

Confirm the first ski day, each hotel’s parcel policy, the depot’s opening dates, and whether your party can carry the equipment if the delivery window does not work. Send us the full route and item counts once you know the stays. We will tell you which legs can be quoted and which should stay with you.
